The Dust Magnet is guaranteed for 5 years. It will remove approximately 90 percent of airborne particles. Smaller particles like smoke and smoke odors are not removed with this type (panel) filter.In order to remove odors and very small particles you would need a filter like a Honeywell CPZ. These filters, however, do not fit in your furnace they are portable room units. A tip for removing more dust in your house is to set the fan switch on your thermostat to "on". This will keep the air circulating 24 hours per day instead of just when the furnace kicks in to provide heat or cooling.
